About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm excited to have Dr. Sarah Peterson, an expert in human trafficking and the lead instructor for the Professional Certificate in Anti-Trafficking Strategies. Sarah, thank you for joining us. GUEST: Thanks for having me, I'm looking forward to our conversation. HOST: Could you start by sharing a bit about your personal experiences and insights that led you to create this course? GUEST: Of course. I've worked in the field for over 15 years, and I've seen firsthand the need for professionals to better understand and address human trafficking. This course is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a real difference. HOST: That's inspiring. Now, in terms of current industry trends, what are some of the most pressing issues or developments in the fight against human trafficking? GUEST: We're seeing a rise in online exploitation, which requires new approaches and collaborations between tech companies, law enforcement, and social service providers. Additionally, there's a growing recognition of the importance of trauma-informed care for survivors. HOST: Absolutely, I can imagine those being significant challenges. Speaking of challenges, what obstacles have you encountered while teaching this subject, and how do you overcome them? GUEST: One challenge is the emotional toll of discussing such a heavy topic. To address this, we incorporate self-care strategies throughout the course and create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. HOST: That's an important aspect of learning about such a critical issue. Lastly, could you share your thoughts on the future of anti-trafficking efforts and where this profession might be heading? GUEST: I'm optimistic about the future, as more people become aware of human trafficking and are motivated to take action. I believe we'll see increased collaboration between sectors, advancements in technology to detect and prevent trafficking, and a stronger focus on empowering survivors and vulnerable populations. HOST: Thank you, Dr. Peterson, for your insights and for creating this vital course. To our listeners, if you're passionate about human rights and want to make a difference in the fight against human trafficking, be sure to check out the Professional Certificate in Anti-Trafficking Strategies.
