About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm excited to have an expert in urban resilience, joining us to discuss the Professional Certificate in Urban Resilient Infrastructure. Could you please start by telling us a bit about yourself and your experience in this field? GUEST: Sure, I'm a civil engineer with over 15 years of experience in designing and managing urban infrastructure. I've seen firsthand the importance of building resilient cities that can withstand the impacts of climate change and population growth. HOST: That's fascinating. The course is described as equipping professionals with critical skills in sustainable infrastructure planning and management. In your opinion, what are some of the most critical skills required for professionals in this area? GUEST: Risk assessment and infrastructure resilience are two key skills. With these, professionals can identify potential threats to urban systems and develop strategies to minimize their impact. Additionally, understanding smart city technologies and water resource management is crucial for creating sustainable cities. HOST: I see. Given the increasing focus on sustainability and climate change mitigation, what current industry trends do you think are most relevant to this course? GUEST: There's a growing emphasis on nature-based solutions, such as green roofs and permeable pavements, which can help manage urban flooding and reduce the heat island effect. Furthermore, digital twins – virtual replicas of physical infrastructure – are being used to simulate various scenarios, enabling better decision-making and infrastructure maintenance. HOST: That sounds fascinating. Now, every profession has its challenges. As an educator, what challenges have you faced while teaching this subject or seen students struggle with? GUEST: One challenge is helping students grasp the complexity of urban systems and the interdependence of various infrastructure components. Another is keeping up with the rapid pace of technology advancements in this field. HOST: Indeed, that can be challenging. Looking towards the future, how do you see the field of urban resilient infrastructure evolving, and what advice would you give to professionals wanting to stay ahead in this area? GUEST: I expect to see more integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in infrastructure management, as well as increased collaboration between public and private sectors to address climate change challenges. My advice to professionals is to stay curious, keep learning, and always be open to new ideas and technologies. HOST: Excellent advice. Thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights on the Professional Certificate in Urban Resilient Infrastructure. It's been a pleasure having you on the show. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure discussing this important topic with you.
