About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we're talking with Dr. Jane Smith, an expert in STEM leadership and the instructor for our new course, "Advanced Skill Certificate in Leadership Skills for Women in STEM". Dr. Smith, can you tell us a bit about this course and what inspired you to create it? GUEST: Absolutely, I'm thrilled to be here! The course is designed to empower women in STEM with crucial leadership skills, addressing areas such as strategic thinking, communication, negotiation, and team management. I noticed a gap in leadership development opportunities for women in these fields, and I wanted to create a program that would help them excel and advance their careers. HOST: That's fantastic. From your experience, what current trends or challenges are particularly relevant to the course content? GUEST: One trend I've observed is the increasing recognition of the importance of diverse leadership in STEM. Companies are starting to understand that having a diverse workforce, especially in leadership positions, fosters innovation and drives better business results. However, there's still a significant gender gap in STEM leadership, and addressing this issue is a key focus of our course. HOST: Indeed, it's crucial to have diverse perspectives in these fields. Now, teaching and learning leadership skills can be challenging—what have been some of the obstacles you've encountered, and how have you addressed them in the course? GUEST: A significant challenge is helping students translate theoretical knowledge into practical skills. To tackle this, we've incorporated interactive activities, case studies, and group projects into the course, allowing students to apply what they've learned in real-world situations and build their confidence as leaders. HOST: That sounds like a very effective approach. Lastly, where do you see the future of leadership in STEM, and how does this course prepare students for what's to come? GUEST: I believe the future of STEM leadership lies in fostering a more inclusive, collaborative, and adaptive environment. Our course equips students with the skills needed to navigate this evolving landscape, empowering them to become influential and effective leaders who can drive positive change in their organizations and industries. HOST: Dr. Smith, thank you so much for sharing your insights and experiences with us today. We're excited to see the transformative impact this course will have on the careers of women in STEM. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm looking forward to seeing the incredible things these talented women will accomplish!
