About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Sarah Thompson, the lead instructor of the Advanced Certificate in Indigenous Law and Community. Sarah, thank you for joining us. GUEST: Thanks for having me, I'm excited to be here. HOST: Could you share a bit about your personal experiences and insights that led you to create this course? GUEST: Absolutely, I've worked closely with Indigenous communities for over a decade and realized there's a significant gap in understanding of Indigenous legal traditions among professionals. HOST: That's so true. And what current industry trends do you think are most relevant to this course? GUEST: There's growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous perspectives in law and justice. More organizations are seeking professionals who understand these traditions and can support self-governance and treaty rights. HOST: Yes, that's a positive step. But I'm sure there are challenges in teaching and learning this subject. Can you share some of them? GUEST: Sure, one of the main challenges is the historical lack of representation of Indigenous legal traditions in mainstream legal education. We're working to change that narrative. HOST: That's commendable. Lastly, how do you see the future of Indigenous law and community? GUEST: I believe we're on the brink of a significant shift. By equipping professionals with this knowledge, we can foster more respectful, equitable relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. HOST: That's a powerful vision. Thank you, Sarah, for your time and for the valuable work you're doing. GUEST: My pleasure, thank you for having me.
